Aves is the latest photobook by Estela de Castro, published in the Cuadernos de la Kursala collection and conceived as the catalogue for the homonymous exhibition at the University of Cádiz.
On its pages, birds appear as the protagonists of a paradox: their very beauty —that which should guarantee them freedom— becomes their condemnation. Their song, their feathers, their bodies. Exploited for the consumption of meat, eggs or foie gras, for ornament, spectacle, or the mere whim of possession.
We worked with the author on the book’s editing and carried out the art direction, seeking a sober and precise visual language that would accompany the strength of the images without diminishing their impact. Every decision on rhythm, typography and structure reinforces the tension between aesthetic fascination and implicit violence, between what attracts and what hurts.
